GO COCKS! Well that probably got your attention. The University of South Carolina Gamecocks is the team that my kids root for. In fact my sweetie says at one time that particular cheer was on the cheerleaders’ underdrawers. Shocking! Regardless of who you root for attending a game is a blast. And a favorite activity of dedicated fans is…. TAILGATING… Here are a few tips that should make your tailgating experience just a little bit more fun.
PLAN AHEAD: If you are an experienced tailgater you probably could provide some tips of your own (and please do below!) But if this is your first time hosting then plan and plan again. Do you have everything you need? I mean everything – how about some spare TP for the port-a-potty?
FRIENDS: Friends are what make it rock. Delegate and share what to bring. Send reminder e-mails or post on facebook in the days leading up to the game to be sure everyone is ready and amp up the spirit.
PARKING: Park at the end of a row or if in a paved parking lot park near a grassy median to allow for more room to spread out into the adjoining area. Another premium spot: near bathrooms or port-a-potties!
ACTIVITIES: Have a face painting contest. Inexpensive Halloween paints are easy to find now. Bring the supplies to build corsages for the ladies in team colors. Tie them on with ribbons that match. Have the kids (or big kids) make a sign or pennant to wave in the stands.
BEVERAGES: Chill plenty well ahead of time. Make sure there is something non-alcoholic for the designated driver.
FOOD: Use colors that match your team. Build a salad or platter for tailgating using foods that reflect your team’s colors (ie: crimson – cranberries, gold – mangos, green – green peppers, etc.) Bake with food coloring to have cakes, cookies, breads, croutons, etc. that spread the team spirit. And check our Sweet Taste of Saturday post tomorrow for a sweet treat that promotes the use of team colors.
BE PROUD: Take lots of garbage bags. Clean up after yourselves. Whether a visitor or an away fan leave a good impression!
And stay tuned all month long while we bring you recipes you can take to YOUR tailgate party!
